What is COBOL?

COBOL (COmmon Business-Oriented Language) is a programming language created in 1959, designed for commercial and administrative data processing. Grace Hopper played a decisive role in its conception, and the stated goal was to make business logic readable by managers, not just engineers.

That explains its verbose, plain-English-like syntax. What looks long-winded today was, at the time, an accessibility innovation.

Why it still exists

The natural question is why a language from 1959 was never retired. The reasons are concrete:

  • Exact decimal arithmetic — COBOL works with fixed decimals, not floating point. In financial computation, that avoids the penny errors modern languages need dedicated libraries to work around.
  • Proven volume — mainframes running COBOL process billions of transactions daily with decades of stability.
  • Migration risk — rewriting a core banking system involves rules accumulated over 40 years, many documented nowhere except the code itself.
  • Cost versus benefit — if the system works and is audited, replacing it is pure risk with no visible functional gain.

Where COBOL runs today

Banks, insurance companies, payrolls, pension systems and governments. In Brazil, traditional financial institutions keep their transactional cores in COBOL on mainframes, with modern API layers on top translating to the web world. The dominant pattern is not replacement, but encapsulation.

Is it worth learning today?

As a first language, no — the concepts it teaches are better learned in modern languages. As a specialization, it is a curious niche: demand exists, the supply of professionals shrinks with every retirement and compensation reflects that scarcity. Why don’t they rewrite the COBOL systems?

Because the risk is disproportionate to the gain. Migrations of that size cost years and enormous sums, and there are public cases of projects aborted after massive investment. The prevailing approach is to keep the core and expose its functions through modern APIs.
